OPEN Pop-up Artist Spotlight: 231 E. Houston

During the month of December three, usually-vacant buildings will be temporarily filled with local art, handmade goods, culinary treats and music. The OPEN pop-up shops provide a unique opportunity for community gathering and local shopping in downtown San Antonio, plus they’re a lot more fun to attend than over-crowded malls during the holiday season. The program, operated by the City’s Center City Development Office and The Downtown Operations Department, wants to shine some light on these old buildings, in hopes that potential retailers will breathe new life into these amazing spaces.

The pop-up at The Schaum Building was open for action this past Saturday, on what seemed to be an unusually busy night for downtown. Although San Antonio is rapidly evolving, this effort keeps the focus on our community by featuring local shops so that locally owned businesses can see the value of setting up in downtown S.A. With growth and change, that’s how we continue to Keep SA Real. If three, temporary, local-centric shops are able to inject a distinct livelihood into our downtown for one month, just imagine how these spaces will thrive with permanent retailers who are passionate about enlivening S.A.’s urban core.

Open from 12pm until 9pm every Tuesdays and Saturdays in December, the shops are located at:

231 E. Houston St.

311 E. Houston St.

115 E. Travis
